Aleksandar Rafajlović, without whom it would be impossible to imagine the contemporary art scene in Serbia, is one of the rare artists utterly devoted to their art, the creator who has never made compromises.
His work is homage to the reverse side of the existence of an artist, as well as to the correlation of professional, commercial and conceptual aspects of the art system. For years, Rafajlović has been spending his summers in Portugal working as a street painter and financing his art in that way. The pencils shown in this image are the remains of his street painting and his “working place” during summer; they are the symbols of an alternative artistic identity.
Aleksandar Rafajlović, born in Berane, Montenegro, in 1957. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, the Department of Painting, in 1980. He finished postgraduate studies at the same faculty in 1983, and specialist studies at École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, in Paris 1983/84.
