Dragoljub Raša Todosijević , Gott Liebt Die Serben, 1991, drawing on paper, 30x20 cm
Got Liebe die Serben is a series of drawings inspired by the events in the 90’s: the breakup of Yugoslavia, the wars, and new nationalist ideologies, which started to affect everyday life. The drawings show how the artist uses various strategies in order to survive as a creative human being in new circumstances, pointing to the destructive power that those ideologies have over individuals and society as a whole.
The artist is playing with the most striking supports of nationalism, connecting the mythic assumptions of one people and their political abuse of Nazi symbols, and bringing about the absurd “truth” in the collective historical memory.
Dragoljub Raša Todosijević, born 1945, is one of the most important artists of the Serbian and ex-Yugoslav scene, and undoubtedly one of the most famous local artists abroad. Winner of numerous awards, and his works are included in many local and foreign private and museum collections.
